Australia won the ICC Women's world cup winning the final against Indian team by 9 runs in Lord's Cricket Stadium, England. The final turned out to be nail bitter with India's taileneders loosing it to lack of experience in pressure situations.
Anya Shrubsole's 6 wickets haul snatched World Cup from Indian teams gasp
Earlier in the day, England won the toss and opted to bat first. They had a decent start with their openers batting on a cautious note. However they lost the first wicket on 47 runs with Gayakwad getting better of Winfield. That opened the gate and from 47 for none England soon reduced to 63 for 3. Then experienced Sarah Taylor and Natalie Sciver put on a 83 runs stand before former got out for 45. Indian bowling attack spearhead Jhulan Goswami got Taylor and Frank Wilson on consecutive balls in her comeback spell. Sciver carried on to get her fifty but only to collapse soon on 51 to give Goswami her third wicket. Goswami pulled India back into the contest and with some style. Indian bowlers started getting better of English batters. Brunt and Gunn played handy innings of 34 and 25* respectively down the order to take England's score to 228/7 in 50 overs. Jhulan Goswami was the pick of the Indian bowlers with figures of 3/23 in 10 overs.
Goswami's 3/23 helped India to contain England to a modest score of 228 runs
Indian team started the chase with the worst start with Mandhana getting out without even opening her account. Mithali Raj and Poonam Raut played with caution not letting the English bowlers to capitalize on the start. Captain got run out on 17 runs with India reaching to 43 runs. Last match's star Harmanpreet then came to the crease and played with confidence she had gained from innings against Australia. Raut and Harmanpreet were building onto a very important partnership. Harmanpreet then got out for well made fifty. Veda who followed her also played well and participated in another crucial partnership with Raut. Raut then got out LBW on Shrubsole's bowling and this sparked the downfall of Indian batting line up. Soon Veda followed and things became tough for Indian batters in the middle. From 193/3 to bundling up for 219 Indian teams fell out to lack of experience. Indian women just fell 9 runs short of the glory and to create history. Shrubsole effected the sudden collapse of the Indian batting line up and her figures of 6/46 won her the player of the match award.
  • Shrubsole took 6 wickets to trigger the downfall of Indian batting line up at a crucial point of the chase
  • Raut, Harmanpreet and Veda tried to take India through before falling apart
